Race conditions

A set of variables that stipulate the conditions that participants in a race have to meet (e.g. age, sex, earnings, distance, and speciality).  Example:  a race for 4 year old horses not having won €35,000 – Distance: 2850 metres.

Racking

An unorthodox gait which is prohibited in a trotting race. Racking is characterized by the horse trotting with its fore legs and galloping with its hind legs.  It leads to disqualification.

Rails side

Climbing, steady or mobile, defining the inside of the track.  By extension, the term “left handed” designates a track when the turns are taken on the left, bearing in mind that the track has only one possible turning direction during competitions.

Rating

Probable ratio of a horse. The rating is only a reflection of the total bets that a horse has gathered.  The lower the rating, the greater the chance that the horse will win.

Relegation

Putting a horse at a later finishing position after an inquiry.

Result is official

A red light appears next to the result on the track’s results board, indicating that the result is final.

Shy

Violent reaction by a horse which runs sideways because it is afraid or surprised.

Silks

Shirts in the colours of a stable owner worn by jockeys to identify the owner.

Skilled

Said of a trotter that can go back to trotting in a few seconds after galloping.

Stable

Starter

The official who brings the runners under orders and makes sure everyone gets a fair start.
