Forfeit

Gait

Motion of the horse (Walk, Trot, Canter (or Gallop), etc.)

Gait judge

Acting under the stewards’ authority, these judges ensure a competitor trots fluently and does not break stride during the race. On big tracks, the judges sit close to the action in a transporter with a panoramic view which follows the runners during the race.

Gallop

Fastest natural gait of the horse, in three beats in its ordinary form, in which a foreleg and a hindleg act together, whereas the other foreleg and hindleg act separately.

The top of the pyramid in racing terms, designating top-class events. All Classics are Group 1, as well as big international races and intergenerational events such as the “Prix d’Amérique” and our “Grand Prix de Wallonie”.

Group 2

Level just under Group 1. Groups 2s include races aimed at selection which often lead to Group 1 level. Example: The Finale du Tour Européen du Trotteur Français which is held on our racetrack around All Saints Day is a Group 2 race.

Group 3

Races at a level lower than Groups 1 and 2.  Provincial Grand Prix are often labelled Group 3.
